Bukittingi
As our days in Sumatra drew to a close, anticipation filled the air for the next chapter of our journey, which would take us to the captivating island of Java. But before bidding farewell to Sumatra, we had one last day to savor the beauty and culture of Bukittinggi and its surroundings.
The Sianok Valley Drive: A Mountainous Marvel: Our day began with a scenic drive through the majestic mountains to the Sianok Valley. The winding roads offered breathtaking vistas, and a short stop at the Maninjau crater lake provided us with a serene view of nature's grandeur.
Pandai Sikat: Craftsmanship in Woodcarving: Next, we ventured to the charming village of Pandai Sikat, where we witnessed the exquisite art of handmade woodcarving. From doors to small trinkets, the skilled locals showcased their craftsmanship, and we left with newfound appreciation for their talent.
Silver Smid's Workshop: A Shining Skill: Our journey then took us back to Bukittinggi, where we made a pit stop to witness a silver smith at work. The intricate process of silver crafting left us in awe of the artisan's skill.
Ngarai Sianok: Nature's Masterpiece: Ngarai Sianok, often compared to the Green Canyon in Colorado, USA, was our next destination. The lush, verdant landscapes mirrored a painting, and we couldn't resist the allure of its natural beauty.
A Mixed Visit to Bukittinggi: Returning to the heart of Bukittinggi, we delved deeper into the city's charms. However, our visit to the local zoo left us with mixed emotions. The condition of the animals saddened us deeply, and it reinforced our belief that such places should be closed if animals are not adequately cared for.
City Exploration and a Bite of Comfort: Our exploration of Bukittinggi continued as we strolled through the city streets. In the evening, we found solace in a familiar place, Pizza Hut, where we enjoyed a comforting meal of pizza.
Conclusion: As the sun set on our last day in Sumatra, we couldn't help but reflect on the unforgettable experiences we had in this remarkable island paradise. From the mountainous landscapes to the craftsmanship of Pandai Sikat and the natural wonder of Ngarai Sianok, Sumatra had enchanted us.
Yet, our hearts ached for the mistreated animals in the zoo, reminding us of the importance of responsible tourism. With a heavy heart, we retired to our hotel, knowing that an early flight to Jakarta awaited us. Java beckoned with its own adventures, and we were ready to embrace them, bidding farewell to Sumatra with gratitude for the memories it had bestowed upon us. Stay tuned for the next chapter in our journey as we explore the wonders of Java!
