Oudtshoorn & Swartberg pass

Today marked an exciting leg of our South African journey as we found ourselves in Oudtshoorn, a place filled with unique experiences waiting to be uncovered. From daring encounters with ostriches to navigating the Swartberg Pass, this day was destined to be one for the books.

Feeding Ostriches by Hand: Our first stop was an ostrich farm, and the highlight of the visit was the opportunity to feed these magnificent birds. Armed with a big spoon, most of our group chose the safe route, spoon-feeding the ostriches. But not me; I decided to be the brave one and fed them by hand. It was an exhilarating experience, feeling the gentle pecks of these majestic creatures as they accepted my offering. I couldn't help but feel a unique connection with these remarkable birds.

Savoring Ostrich Steak at Kobus Se Gat: After our close encounter with ostriches, our appetites led us to Kobus Se Gat, where we dined on delicious ostrich steak. The flavors were unlike anything I'd ever tasted, a perfect blend of savory and succulent that left us craving for more. It was a true culinary delight.

Descending the Swartberg Pass: Our next adventure awaited us at the Swartberg Pass, a rugged mountain pass with breathtaking views. Here, you had the choice to bike down, walk down, or stay in the comfort of your car. Given my hesitation about trusting a bike on such terrain, I decided to walk down with the rest of the group.

As we began our descent, it quickly became apparent that I was slightly more enthusiastic about the hike than my companions. My brisk pace led me to outpace the group, and soon, I found myself quite a distance ahead.

A Staredown with a Baboon: As I continued down the pass, enjoying the stunning vistas and crisp mountain air, a surprising encounter awaited me. On a rocky outcrop, a formidable male baboon stood watching me intently. We locked eyes, and for a moment, it felt like time stood still. I could sense his curiosity, and I remained still, not wanting to provoke any reaction.

After a tense but fascinating staredown, the baboon eventually lost interest and moved on. It was a reminder of the untamed beauty of nature and the unpredictable encounters one can have when exploring the great outdoors.

Conclusion: Our day in Oudtshoorn was a medley of adventure, gastronomic delight, and unexpected wildlife encounters. From hand-feeding ostriches to the silent standoff with a baboon, every moment was a testament to the wonders of travel and the beauty of nature. As we continued our journey through South Africa, we couldn't help but wonder what other surprises and experiences awaited us around the bend.
