Durban & Drakensbergen & Lesetho
Our South African adventure continued with a drive that bridged bustling Durban with the tranquil landscapes of Drakensberg. Along the way, we made a few stops that added unique flavors to our journey, and an unexpected detour took us to the mountainous kingdom of Lesotho.
Durban's Abandoned Stadium: Our journey began with a few short stops, partly to stretch our legs after a long drive and partly to explore the unexpected. In Durban, we paused near a stadium, a relic of the 2010 World Cup. Sadly, we learned that this magnificent structure had fallen into disuse. It was disheartening to see a beautiful stadium standing silent, especially in a city like Durban, where soccer is more than a sport—it's a passion. The absence of the cheering crowds left a void, reminding us of the transient nature of grand events.
Arrival in Drakensberg: After what felt like an endless drive, we finally reached our haven in Drakensberg. The comfort of our hotel was a welcome relief after the hours spent on the road. We eagerly looked forward to the next day, which promised a thrilling adventure.
The Bumpy Road to Lesotho: The following day brought with it an adventure like no other. Our destination: Lesotho, a kingdom within South Africa's borders, high in the Drakensberg Mountains. The journey to reach this hidden gem was an unforgettable one, characterized by winding, bumpy roads that made us feel like children being gently shaken by our parents when we misbehaved.
However, the discomfort of the ride was overshadowed by the stunning landscapes that unfolded before us. The rugged beauty of Lesotho's terrain, untouched by urban development, was a sight to behold. Meeting the local people and immersing ourselves in their culture added depth to our journey, reminding us of the warmth and hospitality that transcends borders.
Lesotho: A Kingdom Apart: Lesotho, often referred to as the "Kingdom in the Sky," is not just a mere region—it's a sovereign nation nestled in the heart of South Africa. Our visit to this unique country was a testament to the rich tapestry of experiences that South Africa has to offer, where borders are mere lines on a map.
Raising a Toast at the Highest Pub in Africa: Our Lesotho adventure led us to the highest pub in Africa, perched at an elevation that left us feeling on top of the world. Here, we indulged in local cuisine and beverages while soaking in the awe-inspiring surroundings.
Conclusion: From the abandoned stadium in Durban to the rugged roads of Lesotho, our journey was filled with unexpected surprises and remarkable moments. It underscored the idea that every corner of South Africa holds its own unique charm. As we continued our expedition, we couldn't help but anticipate the next chapter of our South African adventure, eager to uncover more hidden treasures.
